FAQs

What does LipSafe™ mean?

LipSafe™ is YOM's own standard. It means every ingredient in our formulas is cosmetic-grade for skin AND 100% food-grade certified for the accidental journey in. All our formulas are also independently certified microplastic-free by flustix, and we use food-safe packaging to maintain the integrity of the formula. It's the bar we set for ourselves. It doesn't mean we judge other lip products - that's not our style. Would we love the industry to join us? For sure!

What is the difference between cosmetic-grade and food-grade?

Cosmetic-grade ingredients are tested and approved for external use only, meaning they're safe to sit on your skin. Food-grade ingredients are tested and approved for safe human consumption, meaning they're safe to ingest. Here's the thing: no cosmetic-grade ingredient has been tested for ingestion or absorption through your lips at the real exposure levels we're dealing with today. YOM formulas use ingredients with three certifications: cosmetic-grade (required by regulations), food-grade (required by us), and cruelty-free (required by the universe). Because if it's going on your lips, it's inevitably going in your body - so why not formulate with that journey in mind?

Is food-grade the same as clean or organic?

Nope. ‘Clean’ and ‘organic’ apply to cosmetics (AKA topical or for external use only). Food-grade goes further. It’s a legally defined certification you get on top of cosmetic grade, meaning every ingredient is safe for human consumption. We chose food-grade because lips aren’t just surfaces, they’re portals. Every lick, every snack, every conversation, every reapplication sends those formulas into our bodies. If something is going in, even accidentally, it should meet the same standards as what you eat.

You say you’re independently certified microplastic-free – what does that mean?

It means we didn't grade our own homework. All three of our formulas were sent to an accredited laboratory and assessed by flustix, an independent certification body in Berlin, against the microplastics definition written into EU law. Polymer content must be below 0.01%, for flustix to certify every variant, Honey in the Milky Way, Wild Juju Berry, and Persian Love Cake, and as microplastic-free. We hold flustix license FPMT016, and the certification lives in their public database where anyone can look it up. Independent means someone other than us ran the test, and our formulas passed with flying colours.

Is YOM™ vegan?

YOM™ is certified cruelty-free, and vegetarian. We don't call ourselves vegan because we choose ingredients like beeswax over synthetic ingredients like “synthetic wax” that can be derived from things we’d rather not be eating, like petrolatum. Given the choice between something your body recognizes and processes as food and something synthetic, which is what vegan formulas might need to reach for instead, we chose the one we'd rather have our bodies take in. Still vegetarian. Always cruelty-free. It's a personal philosophy. This one is ours.

Do you use preservatives?

Preservatives are needed when a formula is hydrous, meaning it's made with ingredients that carry enough water activity for organisms to thrive. All our formulas are anhydrous, so they don’t contain water; but we still run water-activity testing to confirm this. To keep the product YOMMY, we recommend using your spatula to apply, storing the jar in a cool dry place, and finishing it within six months of opening. Fresh is best.

Why is your jar 11g? That's a weird number?

It's a YOM thing. 11g is also 0.83oz (which also adds up to 11. So, every 528 LOVING Lip Mask has a fill weight of 11:11. If that feel-good number isn't already on your radar, we urge you to look it up! We wanted that energy in every jar, the kind where you glance at the clock and make a wish. What we didn't plan? The barcodes… They're “randomly” generated when you apply for them as a company, which means you can't request specific numbers. When all YOM™ barcodes came back with 1111 in them, we took it as a sign we were on the right track. When you’re aligned, the universe finds a way of winking back at you.

Can I eat your lip products like food?

We love the enthusiasm, but we're making lippies, not lunch. Every ingredient we use is both cosmetic-grade and certified food-grade, because we know lip products don't just sit on the surface. Still, YOM™ products are formulated and regulated as lip cosmetics, intended for your lips rather than a meal. So while we made them with your mouth in mind, and while what goes on your lips inevitably goes in, we're not telling you to substitute it for a snack. That said, when life happens and your lippie slips past your pout, you're in good hands. These ones are designed to love you back.

Are you going to make other lip products?

Yes. We're cooking up quite a lot of innovation in the lip category and we can't wait to share. So stay tuned and share the love with anyone you know who loves lip products.

Why are your products so expensive?

Totally fair question. Here's what's in that price:Innovation that didn't exist before us. Rare food-grade ingredients that took years to source. Custom packaging made from materials we had to develop with partners in Finland, Austria, and France. And an 11g fill - most premium lip masks are 3-4g. You're getting nearly three times the product. We're not here to gatekeep though.

What is the Lip Service Alliance?

A non-profit our co-founder Laura created to help modernise lip safety standards globally. Through research, advocacy, and industry collaboration - and keeping consumers informed - we're closing the gap between how lip products are regulated and how they're actually used. Laura, Dr. Nora, and YOM support the movement by sharing learnings that will help the industry-wide shift - because gatekeeping health information isn't our thing. (Laura sits on the board without voting rights to keep YOM and LSA appropriately separate. Transparency is key.)

Where are your products made?

Our formulas are made and filled in Italy with a lot of TLC. Our glass is made in Europe. Our lids and spatulas are made from Finnish biomaterials, shaped by artisans in France. It takes a village - a very intentional one. And they're all pretty much neighbours so the planet approves.

Are your products gluten-free / allergen-free?

Our formulas are gluten-free. For a full list of ingredients and potential allergens, check each box individually or the product page on the website.

Do you offer refills?

No, with products so small, the logistics and refill process would actually create more waste, not less. So, we made the most adorable packaging with the most sustainable, planet-friendly circular life instead.

How should I store my lip mask?

When you're not holding it, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use within 6 months of opening - fresh is best.

What does 528 in the name mean?

528 is known as the “frequency of love” - a healing frequency believed to be connected to transformation, harmony, and positive energy. We loved the idea that something you use every day could carry that intention with it. So, 528 became part of our lip ritual: a little reminder to only let in what loves you back.
